The 2016 Terra d’Oro Teroldego is a beautiful, bold and striking wine. Deep purple in color, it is balanced by soft and enticing aromas of burnt crème brûlée toasted coconut, blackberry, earth, plum and dried oregano. This wine showcases a rich entry that leads to a dense midpalate and a long finish of velvety tannins and plum.
Teroldego is a red Italian grape variety grown primarily in the northeastern Alto Adige DOC region of Italy. Often overlooked and esoteric in nature, Teroldego is enjoyed today thanks to dedicated growers and winemakers who champion this unique variety. Terra d’Oro’s Burke Ranch has rocky, shallow soil similar to the gravelly plain of Rotaliano Valley in the Swiss Alps. This type of terroir is ideal for growing Teroldego.
The tanks were inoculated with a docile strain of yeast to keep the fermentation at a relatively cool, steady pace, and were punched down by hand four times daily. After gentle pressing and racking, the wine was aged in 25% new American and French oak barrels for 18 months.
The winemakers at Terra d’Oro appreciate the complexity and colossal characteristics of the Teroldego variety and take great care to minimize the extraction of harsh tannins. Grapes for the 2016 Terra d’Oro Teroldego were hand picked and destemmed, lightly crushed and fermented in half-ton open-top bins.
Food Pairing Notes
