The Terra d’Oro 2018 Sangiovese is a classic example of intensity tempered by elegance and finesse. Warm and inviting aromas of strawberry, rhubarb pie, red currant jam, black tea, cherry cola and dried thyme entice the nose. Light, yet juicy red fruit on the palate with hints of marzipan on the mid-palate leads to a clean finish of raspberry jam. The Terra d’Oro 2018 Sangiovese is vegan friendly and the original potluck wine.
The Sangiovese grape has a long history of being widely planted in Tuscany, Italy where it is used in Chianti production. During the Gold Rush in the late 1800s, the varietal was brought to California by Italian settlers. The warm summer days of California’s Amador County, and the rocky shallow soils of the Terra d’Oro vineyards, are superlative for this grape.
The vineyard team grooms the Sangiovese vineyards after verasion, dropping clusters to increase concentration and color. Sangiovese’s berries are notoriously thin-skinned and highly susceptible to sunburn, so the team takes great care in trellising and irrigation to maintain a healthy canopy in order to shade the finicky fruit.
After an 18 day maceration on the skins, the juice is fermented in stainless steel. The wine was then aged for 16 months in 100% neutral oak barrels. This gentle oak treatment allows the flavors to smoothly integrate, keeping the focus on varietal characteristics.
Sangiovese requires time and care to display its richness, so the winemaking process must be gentle and deliberate. The grapes were partly hand-harvested in the crisp and cool early morning to ensure bright and focused acidity.
