The Terra d’Oro 2016 Petite Sirah is quintessential Amador County, with its rich, powerful flavor. The nose boasts aromas of ripe bing cherry, caramel, fresh plum and cocoa giving way to a focused, captivating palate of cherry compote, pink salt and cocoa. The flavors intermingle with robust tannins and mouth-filling texture.
Petite Sirah has been planted in California as far back as the 1880’s. Today, it is widely used as a blending grape. Varietal bottlings of Petite Sirah are rare gems that highlight the complex flavors of this unique grape. Fruit for the Terra d’Oro 2016 Petite Sirah was handpicked from our twelve acres of Petite Sirah vineyards at Burke Ranch in Amador County. This lot, specifically planted for a varietal bottling of Petite Sirah, produces concentrated fruit with exceptional quality.
The fermenting grapes were pumped-over daily to enhance the extraction of vivid color, flavor and aroma. After settling, the wine was aged in 30% new French and American oak barrels for 14 months before bottling.
Petite Sirah is typically one of the last varieties to ripen, and the 2016 vintage was no exception. The fragile grape clusters were handpicked at first light, de-stemmed and partially crushed, leaving whole berries for fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
