The 2017 Terra d’Oro Exploration Series Barbera is deep garnet in color, lush and inviting. This wine showcases notes of peppercorn, cranberry, Bing cherry, orange chocolate, fresh thyme, violets and graphite aromas that graze the nose. A generous palate of flavor is filled with Rainier Cherry, ripe plums and wet stone. This wine is long, yet delicate on the finish.
Long celebrated in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy for its role in Barbera d’Alba and Barbera d’Asti, the Barbera grape has found a home in the rolling foothills of Amador County. Barbera is widely planted throughout California, but has only recently graced the stage of single-varietal bottlings. Terra d’Oro’s Exploration Series Barbera is exclusively from sunny Amador County, which yields an elegant wine with layers of fruit and spice.
As the red wines were still on the skins, the presses froze and broke and could not be fixed until spring. In turn, the wine had to remain as is for over 90 days, rather than the standard 10–21 days. Using the tank with skins in it, already pressed wine of complementary flavors was added until full. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally and when finished, sulfur is careful added with a gentle pump over. Due to this winemaking technique, tannins become less intense and more velvety rather than becoming harsher. This wine was aged for 18 months in 20% new American oak barrels.
Terra d’Oro Exploration Series wines are born out of the spirit of experimentation and ever evolving the wines created in Amador County, and this Barbera is no exception. This unique style of winemaking was happily discovered by our winemaker out of necessity during an unusually cold end of harvest in Washington State.
Food Pairing Notes
