The Terra d’Oro 2017 Barbera is lush and inviting, showcasing notes of Bing cherry, plum, violets, pomegranate, earth, dried oregano, vanilla and clove aromas that graze the nose. Flavors of herbs, fresh berries and a round mid-palate of fresh cherry lead to a clean finish of refined tannins. Overall, the extended maceration resulted in a beautiful backbone of earthiness and structure.
Long celebrated in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy for its role in Barbera d’Alba and Barbera d’Asti, the Barbera grape has found a home in the rolling foothills of Amador County. Barbera is widely planted throughout California, but has only recently graced the stage of single-varietal bottlings. Barbera from sunny Amador County yields an elegant wine with layers of fruit and spice.
The Terra d’Oro 2017 Barbera was fermented in stainless steel tanks and underwent a total of 40 days on the skins with pumpovers to extract maximum color and flavor from the grapes. Being aged for 12 months in American and French oak barrels, 20 percent of which was new, gave the wine its well-integrated aromas of toasty oak.
