The 2017 Terra d’Oro Amador Spanish Blend is rich and complex, with aromas of pomegranate, cranberry and rum cake, flavors of cherry complemented by vanilla and spice components, and mouthwatering tannins that linger through the finish.
An homage to the heritage of Jose Amador, the Amador region’s founder, this wine is a blend of two classic Spanish varietals, Tempranillo and Graciano. Both thrive in the warm, dry, higher elevation of Amador County, and we planted them next to each other in a flat, low portion of our Burke estate vineyard. This particular section has very shallow soils, even sun exposure and good airflow, which results in even ripening and concentrated flavors. These are the newest additions to the Terra d’Oro vineyards and this wine demonstrates the great potential for these varieties here.
The final blend was determined post fermentation, then aged in French oak (20% new, 80% neutral) for 20 months, giving an elegant frame to the varietal characteristics of the wine. 67% Tempranillo 33% Graciano
Tempranillo and Graciano are the bookends of the red grape harvest, with Tempranillo ripening early and Graciano ripening very late in the year, so the way they interact in the finished wine tells an expressive tale of the vintage. Both varieties were picked by hand during the cooler hours of night to maintain the fruit’s natural acidity, and in the cellar underwent malolactic fermentation, which softens the texture and adds complexity and character.
Food Pairing Notes
This wine practically begs to be paired with a ribeye, but also pairs well with roasted meats and vegetables, or hearty pasta dishes.
