The 2016 Terra d’Oro Aglianico displays bright cherry, anise, clove, wet stone and spice on the nose. This old world variety enters with rustic, enticing flavors of sage and pomegranate with a juicy mid-palate and gritty tannins.
Aglianico (pronounced Ah-lee-AHN-e-koh) is one of the world’s oldest and most celebrated wine grapes. The varietal originated in Greece and was planted in Campania, Italy, by Greek settlers more than two thousand years ago. Away from the gilt and marble of Rome and Venice, Aglianico is still considered a noble red varietal in the provincial parts of southern Italy. In northern California, Aglianico has found a home in Amador County. Terra d’Oro is one of the few California producers who grow the Aglianico grape today. Traditionally planted in hillside vineyards above 1,000 feet elevation, this ancient varietal has found an ideal vineyard on the Terra d’Oro ranch.
The wine was aged in 45% second-fill French oak barrels for 18 months to integrate toasty oak aromas and flavors with the rich, juicy fruit of the Aglianico grape.
The grapes for the 2016 Terra d’Oro Aglianico were fermented in half-ton macro bins, extracting maximum color and flavor. The bins were punched down by hand, multiple times per day, to ensure copious extraction of the variety’s vivid flavor, while minimizing harsh tannins.
