The 2017 Terra d’Oro “Exploration Series” Viognier showcases inviting aromas of orange blossom, tangerine, white peach, cantaloupe, and a hint of sweet basil on the nose. This wine displays a generous entry and a round mid-palate bursting with flavors of ripe melon and stone fruit before ending with a lovely, clean finish.
The majority of the 2017 Terra d’Oro “Exploration Series” Viognier grapes are from a younger vineyard in Clarksburg. Historically, the vineyard had not produced the quality desired for our program, though with some extra attention to detail, this is no longer the case. We decided to open up the canopy in the vineyard to allow more sun exposure on the fruit. This resulted in Viognier that had more depth of varietal character than had been seen in previous years, and a delicious finished product.
The fermentation, combined with the fruit exposure in the vineyard, created a wine with many intriguing layers and interest that we are excited to let shine in this standalone Viognier wine.
Special Exploration series by TdO Winemaker Emily Haines! Small lot, very special Viognier! Grapes for this wine were handpicked in the early hours of the morning. Fermented in 100% stainless steel, we used two different yeasts, bringing two very different styles to the wine; one very mineral and herbal driven while the other offers rich, ripe apricot and tangerine characteristics. The two, when blended back together, results in a wine that is far more complex in aroma and flavor than the individual components.
Food Pairing Notes
Our Exploration Series Viognier is great with a savory carrot ginger soup or shrimp ceviche!
