The 2017 Terra d’Oro “Exploration Series” Pinot Grigio is bright and vibrant opening with inviting aromas of wet stone, flint, pear, Meyer lemon and quince. Minerality characteristics lead to a fleshy, viscous mid-palate and ends with a crisp, clean, refined finish.
This wine hails from Clarksburg, an appellation spanning three counties in the Sacramento Valley. With warm days and cool nights, the Sacramento Delta’s cooling influence enables production of grape varieties not typically grown in California’s inland regions. The Delta ushers in cooling breezes from the San Francisco Bay and just the right amount of maritime influence created to deliver Pinot Grigio grapes with great depth of flavor and structure.
Through this process of juice oxidation, the oxygen binds the color molecules in the juice together creating larger molecules that can then be removed early on in fermentation and results in Pinot Grigio that is colorless and retains expressive aromatics. The clean juice was then cold fermented with yeast 58w3.
Special Exploration series by TdO Winemaker Emily Haines! Small lot, very special Pinot! The wine is made from our earliest pick of Pinot Grigio. The grapes were harvested by hand at night to keep the grapes cold on their trip to the winery. Upon arrival, the grapes are whole cluster pressed. The juice, having naturally picked up color from the pink skins of the Pinot Grigio grape, was then saturated with oxygen. 96% Pinot Grigio, 3% Chenin Blanc, 1% Viogner
Food Pairing Notes
This refined Pinot Grigio pairs beautifully with pan-fried halibut or lemon chicken piccata.
