Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The Terra d’Oro 2014 Deaver Zinfandel showcases warm, inviting notes of oak and spice on the nose, with lively red fruit aromas. Bright raspberry, warm winter baking spices and hints of blackberry cobbler invigorate the palate. A lavish mouthfeel with a clean, focused finish completes this wine—another remarkable vintage from this legendary vineyard in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Vineyard Notes
Deaver Vineyard is one of Amador County’s most historic Zinfandel vineyards, dating back to 1881, when the variety was first planted on this site. Grapes for the Terra d’Oro 2014 Deaver Vineyard Zinfandel came from a 20-acre rocky, shallow lot, comprised of Zinfandel vines more than 130-years-old. Over the years, these vines have anchored deeper into the soil, pulling nutrients from multiple layers of earth to produce highly concentrated fruit.
Winemaker Notes
Over time, the vines at Deaver Vineyard have become self-regulated, meaning they no longer grow as vigorously as younger Zinfandel vines. This allows the vines to focus their energy on smaller clusters to yield vivid color and more complex flavors. A limited amount of fruit from this vintage was handpicked in small bins and gently crushed at the winery. Winemaker Chris Leamy carefully selected specific yeast strains suited for Zinfandel to initiate fermentation, and he utilized pump-over techniques to extract more intense flavor and character from the grapes. This wine was aged for 14 months in premium French and American oak barrels (30% new), which imparted sweet caramel, butterscotch and toasty characteristics in the finished wine.
Food Pairing Notes
For a divine pairing, serve the Terra d’Oro 2014 Deaver Zinfandel with a dry-aged rib eye, topped with a horseradish gremolata made of minced parsley, lemon peel and garlic.
